Our expert teams have worked closely with Network Rail to overcome complex technical challenges and minimise local disruption in constructing the new Clifton Bridge, in preparation for its installation in early 2026.
The Clifton Bridge replacement project is a vital infrastructure upgrade on the West Coast Main Line near Penrith, spanning the M6 motorway. Under a £43 million contract, Skanska is tasked with designing, building and installing a new 130-metre three-span steel bridge to replace the existing ageing structure.
From the outset, Skanska has worked hand-in-hand with Network Rail to refine design and construction methods that meet strict budget and programme targets. This collaboration has been critical in addressing the technical complexity of demolishing the old bridge and installing the new one during a tight 12-day blockade starting 31 December 2025.
Skanska has worked closely with National Highways to build a dedicated slip road off the M6 motorway as part of the scheme. This innovative collaboration was essential to minimise construction traffic impacts on local communities, reducing disruption to residents around Penrith and Clifton.
The project team’s meticulous planning includes fabricating the new 3000 tonne bridge nearby before moving it into position, ensuring minimal disruption to rail services and motorway users. Engagement with other stakeholders, including local authorities, has helped identify environmental sensitivities early, guiding measures to protect local habitats.
Rosario Barcena, Skanska’s Rail Programme Director reflects on this partnership approach: “Working closely with Network Rail and National Highways has enabled us to create a dedicated slip road off the M6 into our specially constructed site compound. This is a prime example of collaborative problem-solving that benefits both the project and local communities.
“We have also developed opportunities for value engineering, such as reusing existing bridge supports where possible, reducing costs and programme timeframes.”
This integrated delivery model fosters strong coordination across supply chain partners experienced in similar rail infrastructure schemes.
Once complete, the new Clifton Bridge will improve reliability and journey times on this critical section of the West Coast Main Line, future-proofing it for decades to come.
Through expert collaboration with Network Rail, National Highways, and key stakeholders, Skanska is delivering more than just a bridge — but a carefully managed project that balances engineering excellence with community care and environmental stewardship.
